Q&A on Wire-trace
- What is this place, anyhow?
What is it? What is it? It’s a website! About photography, technology, and the intersection of the two. It’s also a place where I can get my 15 minutes of fame.
- Why the name Wire-trace.com?
Because - today’s photographer isn’t about darkrooms, film chemicals and negatives. It’s about digital cameras that blur the line between consumer, hobbyist and amateur photographer. It’s about websites and email and bit depth and post processing. About the only thing that modern photography still shares in common with its predecessor is that it still requires two things - light, and a lens to focus it.
- Oh, alright, so it’s about photography. So you’re an expert, then?
Nope. In fact, I’m a bit of a neophyte. Which is why I’m writing this site - to explain my trials and tribulations as I delve into the art of photography the way any true hobbyist would - low budgets and lower time. Don’t get me wrong - I’m a quick learner and have a good understanding of technology, which helps tie all this stuff together…I’m even a published tech journalist. But an expert at photography? No way.
- So you’re putting yourself out here for our amusement as you mess up?
In a manner of speaking, yes. We learn from our mistakes. If I publicize mine, perhaps you’ll learn before you blow a bunch of money on unnecessary equipment, miss that once-in-a-lifetime shot, or can’t figure out what to do with the picture you took.
- Sounds useful - So you’re a website for newcomers, written by a newcomer?
Yes, but no. Sort of? This is a website for people who want to learn, by someone willing to explain his dumb mistakes. It’s also (hopefully) a fairly interesting regular read. Haven’t you ever already been good at something and then someone shows you something else new that you’d never seen? There are infinite possibilities in the world of photography - so many that even an expert can learn from certain mistakes, dumb luck, and flashes of inspiration that another person has.
- Cool, so are you going to do more than just rant like all the other blog sites?
Yep. I hope to pose my experiences in an interesting way, but they will be actual experiences and findings and neat discoveries or neat things to know to avoid. I can’t promise to never rant, but I’ll work my hardest to keep this site about the information, experiences and musings on the theory and art of photography.
- But what about the technology, didn’t you mention something about that?
Sure did - tech happens to be my strong suit. So we’ll cover various tricks, tips, and must-haves for the amateur photographer. And unlike so many sites that LOVE to spend your money, I’m like you - I have a life, a dog, a house, a job…a million other things to handle before I can go blow a grand on the latest and greatest. No, we’ll be looking at technology from a much different light here - the “how can I use, reuse, recyle? Where can I skimp? What do I really need to get better?”
- Neat! So, uhh, when do we get started and stop reading this drivel?
Right now! Just click the “Home” button to start reading away, or “The Gallery” to see some of the pictures I’ve taken. Thanks for reading, and enjoy!
